Handmade Soap in Australia: Melt-and-Pour, Labels and Our Lavender Bar
Handmade soap in Australia explained: what melt-and-pour means, how to read a soap label, gift ideas, and our 95g lavender soap bar with moringa leaf.

Shopping for handmade soap in Australia, you'll see "handmade", "small batch", "artisan" and a lot of other words on the label, and they don't all mean the same thing. I make our lavender soap bar by hand in small batches in Australia, and it's a melt-and-pour soap. This guide explains what that means, how it differs from other methods, how to read a soap label, and how to choose a bar for yourself or as a gift.
Quick answer
"Handmade soap" usually means a person made the bars in small batches rather than a factory line. There are three common methods: melt-and-pour (a ready-made soap base is melted, customised and poured), cold process and hot process (the maker does the soap-making reaction from oils and lye). All three can be handmade. A good seller tells you which method they use. Ours is melt-and-pour: a 95g lavender soap bar with moringa leaf, handmade by us and packed in Truganina, Melbourne, for $7.
What "handmade soap" can mean in Australia
Melt-and-pour soap
A melt-and-pour maker buys a ready-made soap base, melts it, adds their own colour, fragrance and botanicals, then pours it into moulds. The soap-making chemistry has already happened in the base, so the maker's work is in the blend, the pour and the finish. It's the method many small makers start with, and it's what people mean when they search for "homemade soap melt and pour".
Cold process and hot process (how other makers do it)
Cold-process and hot-process makers start from oils or fats and lye and carry out the soap-making reaction themselves. Cold-process bars are then left to cure for weeks. Hot-process bars are cooked so they're ready sooner. These are different methods, not better or worse ones. They take different equipment and skills, and they produce a different bar.
Why we tell you which one ours is
Because you should know what you're buying. Our bar is melt-and-pour. We don't describe it as natural, organic or cold process, and if a listing doesn't say how a handmade bar is made, it's fair to ask.
How we make our lavender soap bar
We melt the soap base in small batches, stir in moringa leaf and lavender fragrance, and pour it into moulds. Then we top each bar with dried lavender flowers. Once the bars have set, we unmould, wrap and pack them in Truganina. The moringa leaf is there for the green flecks and the look of the bar. It's a wash: it cleans and rinses off, and we don't make skin-care claims for it.
What goes into the bar
- Melt-and-pour soap base
- Moringa leaf
- Lavender fragrance (parfum)
- Dried lavender flowers
That's the whole list. The full ingredients are on the label and on the product page.
How to read a handmade soap label
Whichever maker you buy from, these checks will tell you more than the front of the wrapper:
- Method. Does the seller say melt-and-pour, cold process or hot process? If they say "handmade" and nothing else, ask.
- Full ingredient list. Look for every ingredient listed, including the base or the oils, not just the hero ingredient in the product name.
- Fragrance. "Parfum" or "fragrance" means added scent. That matters if you're sensitive to fragrance.
- Who made it and where. A maker's name and an Australian address are easier to trust than an anonymous marketplace photo.
- Weight. Bars vary a lot in size, so check the grams (ours is 95g).
Be wary of a soap listing that promises to treat a skin condition or shows dramatic before-and-after photos. Soap is a wash, and it rinses off.
Lavender soap as a gift
A wrapped lavender soap is one of the easiest small gifts: it's light to post, it doesn't spoil, and nearly everyone uses soap. It works as a guest soap for the bathroom, a teacher or neighbour gift, or a stocking filler.
For Diwali, the bar also comes in our Diwali Gift Box ($20) with 100g Darjeeling loose leaf tea and 30g dried curry leaves. There's no moringa powder in the box.
How to make a handmade bar last
Most handmade bars go soft because they sit in water, not because of how they were made. My routine:
- Keep the bar on a draining soap dish, out of the shower stream.
- Let it dry fully between uses. Two bars used in rotation each last longer.
- Store spare bars wrapped, somewhere cool and dry, away from steam.
- The dried lavender flowers on top may soften or wash away as you use the bar. That's normal.
Patch-test and care
Our bar is for external use only. Avoid contact with your eyes. If you have sensitive skin, patch-test it on a small area before first use, and stop using it if irritation occurs. Fragrance, including lavender fragrance, can irritate some people. If you have a skin condition, talk to your GP or dermatologist before changing products.
Where to buy handmade soap in Australia
You'll find handmade soap at local markets, from small makers online, on marketplaces such as MadeIt and Etsy, and in gift shops. Compare the method, the full ingredient list, the fragrance and who made it. In Melbourne, plenty of makers sell at weekend markets.
